A
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE 2007 CONVENTION
OF
THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF FORT WORTH
NOTE: The Constitution of the Diocese
stipulates that changes to its Constitution do not take effect until
and if they are ratified by a second vote at the next annual
Diocesan Convention which is scheduled for Nov. 14 & 15, 2008.
At this Convention the Diocese of Ft. Worth
passed legislation that signaled:
- it wishes to leave the Episcopal Church
but to remain in the Anglican Communion;
- it is interested in the invitation of the
Anglican Province of the Southern Cone (of South America) to
temporarily join it after separating from The Episcopal Church
(TEC);
- it will make provision for congregations
which wish to remain in The Episcopal Church if and when the
formal separation takes effect.
THE AUTHORITY OF GENERAL CONVENTION &
ANGLICAN IDENTITY
The Convention removed all reference to the
authority of the Episcopal Church from the Constitution of the
Diocese of Ft. Worth and replaced it with language affirming the
identity of the Diocese as a constituent part of the Anglican
Communion.
AN INVITATION TO JOIN THE PROVINCE OF THE
SOUTHERN CONE
The Synod (governing body) of the Anglican
Province of the Southern Cone has issued an invitation to "welcome
into membership of our Province on an emergency and pastoral basis"
any diocese of the Episcopal Church which wishes to remain in the
Anglican Communion while disassociating itself from The Episcopal
Church. The Convention passed a Resolution thanking the Province of
the Southern Cone for their invitation, and empowering "the Bishop
and Standing Committee [to] prepare a report for this diocese on the
constitutional and canonical implications and means of accepting
this invitation.
DISSENTING PARISHES
Provision was made in amending the diocesan
Canon 32 for those parishes which do not want to leave The Episcopal
Church. Guidelines for how that will work are referred to in the
Canon but have not been finalized or published.
